Why Valentine's roses cost more in Bangkok, and how pre-ordering gets around it

Every February the wholesale price of a red rose climbs for one week and falls back the day after the 14th. Where the money goes, what "premium" actually means on a rose, and why the pre-order queue is the only line that moves.

Every year the same question arrives around the 10th of February: why is the bouquet that cost this much last month suddenly a different number? The honest answer is that we ask ourselves the same question every February. Here is what is actually happening to the rose.

One week of demand, one crop

Roses in Thailand come mostly from the north and take weeks to grow to the length a bouquet needs. Growers cannot make more of them for one week in February; they can only hold the harvest back and time it. When the whole country wants red roses on the same three days, the wholesale price climbs through the week and drops the morning of the 15th. Florists everywhere pass that on. Anyone offering January prices on the 14th is either losing money or not selling roses.

What "premium" means

Price is not only about the date. A premium rose is a longer stem, a larger head, and tighter petals that will open over three days instead of collapsing on the second. On the 14th the difference between a rose that survives the evening and one that does not is the whole gift.

Why the pre-order queue is the only line that moves

We buy for pre-orders first. A bouquet booked in January is set aside before the walk-in demand, in the grade we promised, and it gets the delivery window you picked rather than whatever is left. On the day itself, express orders still run — but they take what is in the shop that morning.

How to pre-book

  1. Choose the bouquet on the Valentine's page; roses by the dozen are in the rose collection.
  2. Pick the date and window at checkout — up to 60 days ahead. The evening window on the 14th goes first.
  3. Add the card message in the order note.

The lead-time guide covers everything that is not roses. For roses in February, the rule is simply: earlier.
