Get-well flowers for Bangkok hospitals: five that work, three to avoid, and how to get past the front desk
Hospital rooms are small, shared and air-conditioned to a chill, and every hospital has its own rules about flowers. What to send, what to skip, and what the driver needs to reach the right bed.
A hospital room is the hardest place to send flowers to. It is small, often shared, kept cold, and the person inside may not be able to deal with a vase. The gift should ask nothing of them. Here is what does that, and what does not.
Five that work
- A fruit-and-flower basket. Something to eat, something to look at, and it arrives already arranged. The baskets are our most-sent hospital gift for a reason.
- A small vase arrangement. Already in water, low enough for a bedside table. A vase spares the patient and the nurses any work.
- Sunflowers. Cheerful, unscented, tough in cold dry air. A three-stem bunch is the right scale.
- Soft pink or peach roses. Gentle colour, low scent. Avoid a large red bouquet; it belongs to a different occasion.
- Preserved flowers. For a long stay: no water, no care, no wilting. Preserved pieces go home with them afterwards.
Three to avoid
- Lilies. The scent fills a small room and the pollen stains sheets. Beautiful anywhere else.
- Anything that needs a vase. Nobody has one, and nurses have better things to do.
- White-only arrangements. In Thai custom they read as funeral flowers. Add colour.
Getting past the front desk
Most Bangkok hospitals accept flowers at reception or the ward nurses' station; intensive-care units generally do not. Check the ward first. Give the hospital, the building, the floor, the room number and the patient's name as registered. Include a relative's phone number: the driver calls before going up, and the patient may be asleep. Choose the morning or midday window — afternoons are visiting hours and the desk is busy.
Everything else is on the get-well page. Send the card with a date to look forward to; it does more than the flowers.
