Anniversary flowers in Bangkok: how many roses, which window, and the restaurant trick

Anniversary flowers fail in a boring way: they arrive the day after, or at 4 pm to an empty condo, or to the office after she has left for the dinner. The bouquet is rarely the problem. The timing is. So this guide spends more words on the window than on the roses.

How many roses

Numbers carry meanings in Thai gifting, but they are conventions, not rules. One rose says "you are the one"; three, "I love you"; nine is the auspicious number and the most common small bouquet; twelve marks a full year; twenty and above are for statements. Some couples send the number of years, which works until about year twenty and then becomes a very large bouquet. If you are unsure, nine or twelve red roses is never wrong, and a single long stem on a restaurant table is more elegant than a bouquet that has to sit on the floor.

The window is the gift

Decide where she will be at the moment you want the flowers to appear, and book that window rather than the whole day:

• At home in the morning — the 09:00–12:00 window; the flowers are the first thing of the day.
• At the office — 12:00–15:00, when people are reliably at their desks and colleagues see it arrive.
• At dinner — the 18:00–21:00 window, timed to the reservation.

Each standard window needs three hours' notice; the lead-time guide has the details. Anniversaries are fixed dates, so there is no reason not to book weeks ahead — up to 60 days on the anniversary page.

The restaurant trick

Restaurants in Bangkok are used to this. Put the restaurant's name, the booking name and the reservation time in the delivery address, and choose the evening or night window. The flowers go to the host stand; the staff bring them to the table when you sit down, or when you signal. Two things make it work: the booking name must match exactly, and the delivery must land before you do. Ask for a 30-minute margin.
